Janet Gonzalez-Mena,
From a Parent's Perspective
|
Description:
This book is written by an accomplished educator, researcher and author in the
fields of child development and early childhood education. She is also a mother
of five, well-seasoned by practice as well as theory. The heavy burden of
parenthood is lifted by her compassion, humanity, and not least of all humor.
From a Parent's Perspective is an appropriate supplementary text for
undergraduate courses in "Parent Effectiveness Training" and related areas.
Forty-five separate articles are included under the general categories of: Surviving
Parenthood, Parenting Skills, Discipline, Problems, Self-Esteem, Kids Are
Individuals, and A Few Laughs.
This collection will be a valuable resource in parenting classes!
Review:
“ The conflict wasn’t about resolution but about roar and commotion” (p.4) is
my favorite among Janet’s many straight-to-the-point comments on family life in
this down-to-earth, sensitive and very readable book. Parents are encouraged to
pay attention, to relax, and to be kind to themselves – while appreciating
children’s idiosyncrasies and recognizing that this too shall pass.” —

Excerpt:
Parenting is a human endeavor. When
parents become too concerned about parenting “correctly” they can be afflicted
with a condition known as “analysis paralysis.” Because they are so worried
about doing everything just right, when faced with a decision, they get stuck.
They can’t act. Analysis Paralysis can be a big problem! Luckily, as a parent,
I was seldom afflicted with this condition. Not being a perfectionist, I just
bungled ahead. Some of the stories about my bungling are contained in this
volume. My words of advice are part of those stories, as well as issues to
think about and discuss.
